KEEPING COMPANY WITH CHRIST SERIES: What is the sign to the world that we belong to Christ?

Before we get into the sermonette I want to explain a little about what this series is all about and why I think it is necessary.

There is a set of scriptures in Matthew that I want to read to you and then a paraphrase of these scriptures as well.

(Mat 11:28)  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

(Mat 11:29)  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

(Mat 11:30)  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Now the paraphrase is from the Message Bible and it goes like this:

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. (The Message)

Now I do not reccomend this version of the bible which is not a true translation and very much a Trinity based thinking. Yet for this verse some things were said which seem very important to me.

It said “KEEP COMPANY WITH ME” that phrase kept coming back to me and it began to play itself out in my  mind like this.

In my day when you kept company with someone it related primarily to a man and woman keeping company with each other as a prelude to marriage. They were spending time learning about each other and they liked and didn’t like, how they responded to certain things and how they thought about things.

We are to be the bride of Christ it is only natural that we should spend time with Christ to learn about Him and that is exactly what Mat 11:29 was saying, “take my yoke upon you and learn of me. Is just saying to follow Christ and learn about him and how He thinks and it will make things easier for us.

Rom_13:14  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

(Eph 4:13)  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Here is how we will be able to walk in His ways by learning more about Christ Himself and what He thinks just as any bride would want to learn more about her husband before the marriage so she can be more like what He expects her to be.

So then how do we go about Keeping Company with Christ?

The bible indicates 4 tools that we can use to learn about Christ and to spend time with Christ. It is not my purpose to go into depth about those now as we are all familiar with them but only to mention them in passing.

Prayer
Bible Study
Fasting
Meditation

Here is where we need to spend our time learning about the bridegroom if you will.

Today in this part of this series of talks I want to go into a word study.

In the Old Testament we are told that the Sabbath is a Sign that we are God’s people.

(Exo 31:13)  Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

Notice that the Sabbath day is a sign between God and His people. By keeping the Sabbath we are displaying a sign to God that we are His people.

But notice something in the book of John in chapter 13;

(Joh 13:34)  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

(Joh 13:35)  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Do you see the difference here? All men, the world, will see that you are Christ’s disciples by the love you have one to another.

1 CORINTHIANS 10:17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. ”

Yet look at what we have going on in our churches today. Groups forbid thier members to fellowship with thier brethren only because they attend a different group. How does that demonstrate to the world any love for your brother and sister in Christ?

Paul tells us in; 1 CORINTHIANS 10:17

LOVE ON ANOTHER

Rom 13:8  Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

So how do we go about showing our love for the brethren. Today I want to help you see the mind of Christ by going through a word study about the phrase (one another) here are a number of scriptures where we are told how to treat one another.

1Pe 1:22  Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

FELLOWSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER

Notice how the observation that Malachi portrays demonstrates a love for the brethren and how God rewards that.

Mal 3:16  Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.
Mal 3:17  And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.

certainly contact and fellowship amongst the brethren is very important to God.

EDIFY

1Th 5:11  Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

In one of the defintions Thayer gives for the word edify means to:
to promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection, grace, virtue, holiness, blessedness

EXHORT ONE ANOTHER

Heb 3:13  But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Help one another to walk in righteousness while there is time.

BEAR ONE ANOTHER’S BURDENS

Isa 41:6  They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage.

CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER

1Co 12:24  For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
1Co 12:25  That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

ACCEPT ONE ANOTHER

Rom 15:7  Wherefore receive(ACCEPT) ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Rom 14:1  Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
Rom 14:2  For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
Rom 14:3  Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
Rom 14:4  Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER

Eph 4:31  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Eph 4:32  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

LIVE IN HARMONY WITH ONE ANOTHER

1Pe 3:8  Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

FORGIVE ONE ANOTHER

Eph 4:32  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

BE HOSPITABLE ONE TO ANOTHER

1Pe 4:9  Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

BE DEVOTED AND HONOR ONE ANOTHER

Rom 12:10  Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

BELONG TO ONE ANOTHER

Rom 12:5  So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Eph 4:25  Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

DO NOT TO ONE ANOTHER

Col 3:9  Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

TEACH ONE ANOTHER

Col 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

AGREE WITH ONE ANOTHER

1Co 1:10  Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER

Php 2:4  Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

SUBMIT YOURSELVES ONE TO ANOTHER

Eph 5:21  Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

LAY DOWN YOUR LIVES ONE FOR ANOTHER

1Jn 3:16  Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

DO NOT PROVOKE OR ENVY ONE ANOTHER

Gal 5:26  Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Brethren we should read the scriptures often. Print out the transcript of this sermonette so you can keep these scriptures handy and read them often even perhaps when you pray or meditate think about these admonitions from the word of God on how we should demonstrate our love for the brethren.

This is putting on the mind of Christ: Php 2:5  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

This is indeed Keeping Company with Christ.
