In the Old testament you see the phrase “mighty men of valor” repeated many times. The meaning of the Hebrew relates to having Virtue. These were strong courageous men of Virtue. Warriors able to defend Israel against her enemies.
In the New Testament God tells us that not many mighty or great men are called.
1Co 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
But are we to stay that way?
Paul tells us that we are in a constant battle. That our warfare is Spiritual in nature.
2Co 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
As a new Christian we enter into an intense training period where we learn the knowledge of God and go though many training scenarios to strengthen and test our abilities and to gauge our readiness.
But we cannot stay students forever. At some point in time we are ready to take up the armor and weapons provided to us. To STAND up for what we believe and to engage in that spiritual warfare. We have been trained and gained the experience we need move on to engage in battle to over come our sins and the pulls of the flesh to resist satan and win.
Just remember how the bible describes the ready warriors of Israel.
- Mighty – That is strong and courageous – Notice God tells Joshua what is needed;
Jos_1:7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
- of Valor – Virtuous – Virtue includes many characteristics that we need in our lives, strength, bravery, moral goodness and the sense of excelling in all of these.
So you see we need to become these Mighty Men and Women of Valor. It takes more than just having the weapons of warfare to win a battle. We must also have the strength and courage to step up and do the right thing, we must have the training in the word of God to even be able to wield the sword of the spirit mentioned in Eph. 6. We must have had our sense exercised and become spiritually mature in order to deal with what ever satan or the pulls of our flesh throw at us.
Heb 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
Heb 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
And the one thing that every soldier going into battle must have to survive is ZEAL. The one thing that is so lacking in this ERA of God’s Church. So much so that I believe we have settled into an acceptance of the Status Quo. Not many of us are going out of our way to search for the hidden sins that are apart of each of us. We are no longer striving to OVERCOME.
We don’t think of ourselves as warriors standing up for Christ and His truth. Rather we think of ourselves as kind of Librarians holding fast to truth that was given to us a long time ago. Not realizing that by not stepping forward and taking up the tools and attitudes of spiritual warfare we have stopped overcoming and we are beginning to fall back, our faith is weakening, we are quenching the Spirit of God within us to a point where when something really bad happens we will not have enough to make it trough the spiritual battle that will ensue and are in danger of losing that Spirit of God.
Christ is trying to wake us up brethren. He is knocking on our door asking us to open to him. It only requires that we repent and become zealous for His word again. Then He can come in a feed us what we need to be ready for what is coming.
The Knock of Jesus Christ is an important concept that we all need to be aware of and diligently seeking to be able to open that door immediately.
Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Rev 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Rev 3:22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Wake up brethren, Rise up and open the Door now while you still can.
