You know this time frame(era) of the Church of God is derided because they do not feel that they need anything. They are maligned for being lukewarm in their attitudes. Yet they feel very self satisfied with themselves. Rev. 3:14-17

God on the other hand is threatening to spew them out of His mouth and into, apparently, the Great Tribulation. How did this happen? Have we stopped putting any effort into our christian lives and so, do we find ourselves drifting and not so close in our contact with God?

I’ve heard the Christian life referred to as being in the middle of a slow moving river. Our Christian Goal is achieved by moving against the current. We have to be overcomers after all. It is only those that overcome that will inherit. Rev. 21:7-8

The point I am making is that we cannot stand still and be self satisfied with ourselves. The moment we do that we begin to move away from our Goal. The current in that river we call life begins to move us away from our goal. At that moment we begin to quench the Spirit within us.

Paul tells us it is like a race and that he strives to win.

1Co_9:24  Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

He tells us all to Strive together for the faith of the Gospel.

(Php_1:27)  Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

He asks us to “contend for the faith”.

Jud_1:3  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Do you begin to see the picture? Laodicea is in danger because they are no longer striving as individuals for the faith that they have been given. they have forgotten the admonition by Solomon;  Ecc_9:10  Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

The Spirit within them is being used up because they have stopped using it to move forward to grow and overcome. At a time when we are all going to need as much of God’s Spirit as possible we are losing what we have because we are not using it.

Brethren if we are just doing what we have been commanded to do then we are considered to be “unprofitable servants”.

Luk_17:10  So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

So if we want to even be considered to escape what is coming and if we want to be sure that we have enough oil in our lamps if we have to go through the tribulation ahead of us, then we need to get serious about running the race that Paul spoke of above. We need to bring our bodies into subjection and every thought into captivity to reach that Goal.

1Co_9:27  But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

2Co_10:5  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

So yes brethren it does take effort to be a Christian. We don’t just patiently endure although that is part of the process, we must strive, contend for the faith daily otherwise we begin to float downstream. There is no such thing as “resting on your laurels” for a Christian. It is either move forward to your reward or drift backwards away from it.
