I was thinking about the work that Christ said He was doing in Laodicea, this morning, and it occurred to me that there is a significant similarity in what Christ is doing today and what He did during the Philadelphian ERA of the church.
At first glance it doesn’t seem that way. I mean the Open Door work that Christ did in Philadelphia was a huge effort to reach the world in a powerful way to witness to them about what is coming. And to give them, the world, a chance to save themselves by repenting and turning back to God. It was in a sense the Ezekiel Watchman work. The world and the nations of Israel were being given their last warning and chance to repent before the end time scenarios began to play out.
Rev 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
Eze_33:6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.
Eze_33:7 So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.
But then when you look at the works of Christ for Laodicea you see what appears to be a completely different work.
Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Here we see Christ working with the individual members trying to get them to open up to Him and repent and become zealous.
So how are they the same then when they appear so different on the surface?
The target and the methodology were different but the desired end result was the same in both cases.
On the one hand Christ was giving a warning to the nations of earth to repent so that they might avoid what is coming. Noah took 120 years warning the pre-flood world and then the flood came. Mr. Armstrong took slightly over 50 years to give the witness and Ezekiel warning to the world to repent so they would not have to go through the Great Tribulation that is just around the corner.
So now we see Christ warning His people those called to be firstfruits, that they needed to change, to become zealous and to repent in order that they “might be counted worthy to escape” what is coming.
In only two of the seven ERA’s of God’s church do we see Christ performing a work directly. Only in Philadelphia and Laodicea do you see His intervention. But notice what is similar about each is that they are both and effort to save people out of a major catastrophe, in point of fact the same catastrophe, that was coming on them. In Philadelphia Christ was trying to save the Nations from disaster while in Laodicea He is trying to get His people to a point where He can save them from the Great Tribulation by taking them to a place of safety.
In both cases and time phases of the church He was putting out a “Safety Net” to save as many as could be saved out of the End Time Disaster scenarios as was possible. Christ was and is demonstrating His love for us all.
