This Bible Study to learn from the Bible just what God expects of us.

We know that we are going to be judged by our works. But how do these works present themselves?

(Mat 16:27)  For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

He also says that with Him(Jesus) we can do nothing at all.

(Joh 15:5)  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

So if we are judged by our works but we can do nothing without Him how does that work?

On top of all that He tells us that He expects us to produce fruit some 30/60/100 fold

(Joh 15:5)  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

What kind of fruit are we talking about here?

So let’s begin to kind of break this down.

Let’s look first at what He means by Fruit and why that is so important.

When we are called at the very beginning we are told that those who make it to be chosen will have received the seed on good ground and will produce much fruit. It will differ from one to another but the fruit will be there.

(Mat 13:23)  But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Remember God says He wants “profitable” servants not just commandment keepers

(Luk 17:10)  So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

What is that all about? If we can’t tie this all together it can get confusing to the point where we just stop thinking about it. And that is the danger.

Let’s think about this from the Fruit/Profit angle a bit.

When a farmer plants seed he spends a lot of money buying the seed, preparing the land. He does this expecting to make a profit, that is he is going to get back more than he put into it.

Think about all that God and Christ have put into this “human” project. They want a profit, in their case the profit/fruit is Spiritual Children born into the Kingdom.

Holding that thought think about a human embryo. If an embryo stops growing inside the womb it won’t be born. The implanted seed will not produce fruit if the embryo does not keep growing.

I am thinking we are a lot like that. I mean how often have you heard the word of God telling us to GROW!

Here are just a couple:

1Pe_2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

2Pe_3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

But now it gets a bit scary here. Jesus Feeds us so we can grow but it seems as if it is the Father who is the husbandman and makes sure that we develop fruit.

I Am the True Vine
Joh 15:1  I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Joh 15:3  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Joh 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Joh 15:6  If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Joh 15:7  If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Joh 15:8  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

I want to come back to this fruit idea but for a moment look at what happens to the “unprofitable” servant.

(Mat 25:30)  And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

This is the man who was given a talent to grow but did not grow it at all. He is called unprofitable and is punished greatly.

So are we growing is our fruit increasing?

So How do we go about producing/growing this Fruit? And what does Fruit have to do with Works.

Paul tells us that while Israel did indeed follow the law they never attained the law of righteousness which is of Faith.

Israel’s Unbelief
Rom 9:30  What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
Rom 9:31  But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
Rom 9:32  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

Isn’t that saying the same thing that Luke 17:10 told us about not being a profitable servant if you only did what you were commanded to do?

The Faith that they lacked is what is given to us by the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit.

Remember the NEW COVENANT is to be written in our hearts and minds;

Jer 31:31  Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jer 31:33  But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

(Heb 8:10)  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
God found fault with Israel which is why He gave us a New Covenant. In Romans 9 above we saw that the fault he found was that they were trying to keep the law on their own and developing their own righteousness. In doing so they failed not having faith as part of thier works.

So we see that one of the tools that God is using to bring us to the point of being Born into His kingdom. Is putting His law in our hearts and minds.

But how does that work? How is it accomplished and what effect does it have on us and the fruit and/or works that we are to produce?

Enter the Holy Spirit into the game plan

So we saw that God found fault with Israel because they were trying to be righteous by their one strength and it just wasn’t working.

So for us in the new covenant He gave us His Spirit to dwell inside us creating in actual fact a brand new being. As well as giving His Son Jesus to die for us that our sins might be forgiven. Now we have a brand new start.

Joh_14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Act_2:38  Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

2Co_5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

So now we see that the seeds being planted in good soil are given forgiveness and the Holy Spirit to go forward.

So what happens now. Notice that the word fruit or fruits are mentioned in the New Testament 98 times in the KJV of the Bible. And when, you read them, most are talking about the fruit that comes from our good works. You will know them by their fruit comes to mind.

But how are we able to produce these good works that we heard about last week when Israel was not able to do so.

OK We have God’s Spirit residing inside us. What does that do to or for us? let’s go to that familiar scripture in Galatians.

Gal 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Did you see that, faith is a fruit of God’s Spirit. In fact notice this, the scripture reads fruit of the Spirit, not fruits(plural) of the Spirit. I think that is important to notice because these are not 9 different fruits that you might or might not get from God’s Spirit these are in fact ALL PRESENT within the Spirit of God that is now dwelling inside you.

These are characteristics of the Holy Spirit within you. Characteristics of God actually. If you have all these character aspects in your life you will be living or fulfilling the law almost automatically. I personally think that is what is meant in a spiritual sense by the phrase “against such there is no law” The is no law rule book because you will be living the law because of the characteristics that you are developing from the Holy Spirit.

Someone said that rules are for children who do not know what is right or wrong and have to be shown. I am not saying that the law is done away or any such thing I am merely saying like Paul said that our senses are being exercised to see what is right or wrong.

Heb 5:14  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

The laws of God are being put in our minds and hearts and the way that works is that the fruit of God’s Spirit within us is creating a conscience in our mind that sees what is right or wrong and always chooses the right simply because to us it is just the right thing to do.

But and there is that but again. Like everything else in this life we have to do it ourselves. The spirit does not just come in a give us character or conscience. We have to work at it.

So How do we use the fruit of the Spirit to develop fruits of our own?

Here is the key to growing fruit.

(Gal 5:25)  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Then Peter shows us a simple but very effective plan that if we put in place absolutely guarantees our place in the Kingdom and more.

Confirm Your Calling and Election
2Pe 1:3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
2Pe 1:4  Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2Pe 1:5  And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

plousiōs

ploo-see’-oce
From G4145; copiously: – abundantly, richly

(1Co 15:41)  There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

I believe that this scripture is showing that to the extent that these things abound in your life indicate the degree of glory/power that you will have as a Spirit being.

2Pe 1:12  Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
2Pe 1:13  Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

It is not my plan tonight to go into each one of these items that Peter tells us to add to our faith that will come as separate discussions or sermons as we go along. But I would like to show you some things about them and how they compare so closely to the Fruit of God’s Spirit.

Fruits of the Spirit compared to the things above:

Faith                                  Faith
Love                                  Love(charity)
Joy                                     Godliness(trust)
Peace                                Knowledge
Patience(longsuffering)  Patience
Gentleness                      Brotherly Kindness
Goodness                        Virtue
Meekness                        Brotherly Kindness
Temperance                    Temperance

Do you see how closely these items compare to each other? Peter is not talking about finished works here, brethren, he is talking about us developing each of the attributes(fruit) of God’s Spirit within us. He is telling us to work hard, diligently, to add each of these attributes to our lives just as we added faith in God and Christ to our lives.

If we have each of these characteristics of God’s Spirit in us abundantly then we will be able to “walk in the Spirit” we will be able to keep the law in all of its spiritual applications because we will see life and the details of living this physical life as God would see it. We will see the right thing to do in every situation that we come across and we will just simply do the right thing.

This is having God’s Law written in our hearts and minds, this is the New Covenant at work in us. This is what enables us to keep the law of righteousness in faith. Because God has altered our Conscience to a point where we see things as God sees them.

We have truly put on the Mind of God which be the way we are told to do:

1Co_2:16  For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

(Gal 3:27)  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

So let’s work diligently at adding the attributes or Fruit of God’s Spirit to our daily lives so that we can; Put on the Mind God
