2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Even beyond the context in which we find this verse, there are situations where people are so busy learning that they are not coming to the truth.
What I mean is that some of us feel that if we just keep learning new truths that we are kind of safe. they think that God is pleased with how much we know. But is head knowledge what is important to God for us? Notice what Paul says;
1Co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
What’s in our heart is what is important to God.
Also when we learn are we really learning are we really listening? As an example years ago I was coming back to the church but did not have anywhere local to attend and there was no internet like today. A friend sent me a box of sermon tapes from a minister from our groups and I used them to study with for quite a while. Many times I would listen to them as I lay down before going to sleep and because this ministers voice was deep and even toned I frankly fell asleep more often than not as I listened to the sermon. Now Earl Nightingale might tell you I was sleep learning but I do not believe God sees it that way. 🙂
If you wish to be learning new things then we need to be actively a part of the process. Remember how it was back in the old days of WCG? At services we had out bibles and note pads out and were looking up each scripture and making notes about it in our bibles and note pads. We would review them afterwards and even make further notes.
Learning is a verb not a noun. It describes an active process not a static situation. The very act of looking up the scriptures adds to you knowledge as you see them in context which adds depth to what you are learning. Making notes about them sets the concepts you are learning in your mind.
If you are just listening to be listening it rather like listening to good music you are not being “exercised” by what you are hearing because you are not applying what you are hearing to yourself. You should ask yourself does this apply to me and how?
You should take a few minutes and meditate on what you heard. Do you know of any other scriptures that might apply to this in corroboration or in opposition to the conclusion? If so find them and compare them.
Brethren we are being groomed to be Kings and Priests in the world tomorrow, this is part of that training. Notice:
(Pro 25:2) It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
God expects us to search out a thing. Do not just take what is said at face value and decide that you have learned something or have done something that is pleasing in God’s eye, because you have not. If you do not take the time to truly apply your mind to what you are being taught then you are not fulfilling your role as a disciple of God, NO MATTER WHO IS GIVING IT TO YOU!
We cannot afford to be weak minded about this. If we has all truly done this years ago them perhaps we would not be so divided today.
The point is that we cannot afford to be “EVER LEARNING“ yet not being able to come to the truth. With God’s Holy Spirit within us there is no excuse for not being able to come to the truth if we are willing to apply ourselves.
God tells us in James to ask for wisdom but in the same breath He says that we are not to doubt that He will to that.
Jas 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Jas 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
Jas 1:7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
Jas 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
If you say that you cannot have the wisdom to discern the truth then all you have to do is ask God. If you still say that then either you are lacking faith and need to be asking for that or you are not letting the spirit guide you. In any case the problem is ours we have the tools and we need to make use of all of them if we wish to be profitable servants of God. Kings and Priests in training so to speak.
You know the world might be thought of as a “spiritual boot camp” wow thinking of God as my drill master gives new meaning to the scripture below:
Heb_10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
